Summary

The teaching is sanditthiko and paccattaṃ — to be seen for oneself, known by oneself — which is exactly what makes external measurement interesting.

Dennison’s 2019 work recorded EEG from twenty-nine advanced practitioners and found distinct patterns by jhāna level.

The striking results: in the second jhāna the brainwaves run slower than in coma while the practitioner remains fully aware, and in the third the alpha rhythm present in every waking person disappears.

  1. The levels the texts distinguish show up on the instrument

    The interesting part is not that meditation is good for you but that the sutta ordering matches the data.

  2. Slower than coma while fully aware is hard to explain

    Within ordinary neuroscience that degree of slowing should come with loss of consciousness.

  3. The vanishing alpha is a checkable marker

    Alpha is present in every waking person, so its absence is unambiguously anomalous.

  4. Measurability does not make brainwaves the goal

    The data confirms something is happening. It does not change what jhāna is for.
