The Four Satipaṭṭhāna

ฝรั่ง “รีแบรนด์” ธรรมะ? “Mindfulness” ใช่พุทธ หรือไม่? ตัด “ศาสนา” ออกแล้วเหลืออะไร?

Summary

US national survey data puts adult meditators at 60.5 million in 2022, a larger figure than most assume.

Mindfulness travelled from practice lineages into medicine and psychology, and was deliberately secularised so it could enter the health system.

The talk answers directly how it resembles and differs from the four satipaṭṭhāna, and what is lost when the original frame is removed.

Key points

  1. Removing the religion was the price of access

Without secularisation, hospitals and schools could not adopt it. That is a straightforward reason.

  2. Sati in satipaṭṭhāna has a definite object

Not present-moment awareness in general, but seeing the three characteristics in what is arising.

  3. What goes missing is the frame and the destination

Without the truths and the path it becomes a stress-reduction tool — not wrong, but a different thing.

  4. The benefits are still real benefits

The talk does not dismiss mindfulness. It asks that it be called what it is.
