Summary

China and Russia describe the Thai–Cambodian border problem as a colonial inheritance. The conflict is considerably older.

Over four hundred years ago Phraya Lawaek of Cambodia repeatedly attacked whenever Siam was weak.

King Naresuan responded by taking the army to Lawaek decisively — an episode still invoked today.

Key points

  1. The colonial explanation is not wrong but incomplete

French border-drawing made it worse. It did not start the conflict.

  2. The pattern is exploiting the other side’s weakness

This is ordinary behaviour for a small state between larger ones, not a national characteristic.

  3. Naresuan’s response is remembered on both sides

The same event is a pacification from one direction and a wound from the other.

  4. The long history changes how today’s news reads

Read as isolated events, it keeps surprising you. Read as a pattern, it can be prepared for.
