Samādhi & the Four Jhānas

Summary

This session lays out samādhi in four simple steps for people who work, without heavy technical vocabulary.

Step one is settling on the breath — an anchor available anywhere, at any time.

Step two is letting go of the breath, at which point rapture appears; step three is letting go of rapture, at which point ease appears.

Step four is letting go of ease, which is the fourth jhāna.

The whole structure is releasing what was held at the previous stage, layer by layer — not accumulating more.

Key points

  1. The breath is the entry, not the destination

Step one uses the breath to settle; the next step is putting it down.

  2. Every stage is a letting go

Forget the breath, forget rapture, forget ease — the same move three times.

  3. Rapture comes before ease

The order does not reverse, and knowing it keeps you from misjudging where you are.

  4. Even the pleasant has to be released

Rapture and ease are the easiest things to cling to, which is what makes stages three and four the real work.

  5. Designed to be usable by working people

It needs neither long hours nor a special place to begin.
