I have a cross on my palm — but this is not about palmistry
Summary
Some people meet heavier obstacles than others. Some do everything right, give everything they have, and are never recognized for it. Some have fought so long they have started asking what the point is.
This is not about the lines on a palm. It is about resolve: the resolve not to lose your footing however harsh life gets, the resolve to turn what you have carried into understanding, and the resolve not to keep that understanding to yourself but to pass it to people walking a similar road.
The three run in order. First, however heavy it gets, do not lose your footing. Second, having kept it, the suffering has to become understanding. Third, having understood, pass it on.
Four qualities hold them up: energy, which refuses to let obstacles destroy the core; patience, which absorbs pain without breaking; wisdom, which extracts the lesson from the wound; and determination, the resolve never to sell what is essential in yourself.
Key points
Resolve is not motivation
Motivation rises and falls by the day. Resolve is set in advance, for the days when motivation is absent.
Keeping your footing has to come first
Lose it and the suffering turns to bitterness only. There is nothing left to convert.
Suffering does not become understanding on its own
The lesson has to be actually extracted. Otherwise what remains is the wound, not the understanding.
Understanding kept to yourself is not the full circuit
The third commitment is to pass it on — which is what gives what you went through meaning beyond yourself.
Determination means not selling your core
In situations where trading it away would be far easier, only something set in advance holds the line.
