Summary

The opening question: why does someone who reaches the fourth or eighth jhāna and feels profound peace find the suffering back when it fades.

The answer is that concentration alone does not produce permanent release, because it does not work directly on wrong view.

The role of vipassanā is to bring virtue, concentration and understanding into balance. Part of the content was guided by Phra Brahmavajiraboddhivongse, abbot of Wat Thai Buddhagaya and the speaker’s own preceptor.

Key points

  1. Jhāna can fade; understanding does not

That difference is what explains why deep concentration is not a guarantee.

  2. The four elements are a tool for loosening what is held

Contemplating the body as elements relaxes the sense of ownership without forcing it.

  3. Virtue, concentration and understanding travel together

Missing any one leaves the other two working at half strength, which is why they are called a threefold training.

  4. The speaker names his source

Saying which part came from his preceptor lets a listener weigh it for themselves.
