Summary

Rebirth is studied systematically at a major American university. The line of work begins with Ian Stevenson and continues under Jim Tucker.

The James Leininger case is the classic example: a two-year-old giving the name of a ship, the names of men on it, and the circumstances of a crash.

What keeps it in the literature is the idea of B items — statements recorded before the deceased was identified.

Key points

  1. The order of the record is the whole case

A statement recorded after identification carries almost no weight. B items are therefore the decisive criterion.

  2. This is institutional research

Decades of it at the University of Virginia, rather than a collection of anecdotes.

  3. The sceptics have arguments worth hearing

Cryptomnesia, leading questions and reconstructed memory account for a good many cases.

  4. Some of it remains unexplained

The talk does not settle it. It separates what has been accounted for from what has not.
