Summary

The proposal is to match the teaching to the state of mind rather than apply one principle to everything.

For heavy suffering, the ten pāramī — especially energy and patience — because those hold when nothing can be thought through.

For middling suffering, the Four Noble Truths as a frame for knowing the suffering and seeing its cause. For light suffering, the three characteristics, watching impermanence without feeding it.

Key points

  1. The right teaching at the wrong moment does not help

Trying to contemplate impermanence on the worst day usually fails and adds discouragement.

  2. Energy and patience require no understanding

They work when the mind is not yet able to think, which is why they suit heavy suffering.

  3. The truths need a mind that has some footing

Seeing the cause is work for understanding, and understanding needs a little space first.

  4. Not feeding it matters as much as examining it

Light suffering usually grows from repetition rather than from the event itself.
