Arahantship in one minute? One teaching, immediate liberation — Bāhiya
Summary
Is it really possible for someone to hear the teaching once and be liberated on the spot?
Bāhiya Dārucīriya is the disciple the Buddha praised as foremost in swift realization. He had been venerated by people to the point of believing himself already an arahant — until a well-meaning deva corrected him, and he set out immediately to find the Buddha.
What he heard was a few sentences: “In the seen, let there be only the seen; in the heard, only the heard…” That was all. His mind was released from the taints, and he was an arahant.

What nearly blocked him was not coarse defilement but other people’s belief that he had arrived, which he came to share.
The deva corrected him; it did not teach him
What he received was the news that he had not arrived. The road still had to be walked.
The instruction is very short and cuts exactly
“Only the seen, only the heard” cuts the elaboration that follows contact — not the perceiving itself.
The speed came from readiness, not from the words
The same sentences do not produce the same result in everyone. What differed was the state of the listener.
