More than 2,500 years ago at the Deer Park at Isipatana, the Buddha taught for the first time, to the group of five.
That discourse is the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, which sets out the middle way and the four noble truths — the framework that actually leads out of suffering.
Asalha Puja is therefore not merely a holiday but the day the Triple Gem became complete: before it there was Buddha and Dhamma, but no Sangha.
