Summary

A summary of what has actually worked for the speaker — settling the body, dealing with drowsiness, and reaching the point where the breath becomes too subtle to be noticed.

The one thing to hold onto: do not be taken in by the phenomena. Rapture, light, images and trembling can all arise, and none of them is the goal.

The practitioner’s job is to notice and let go — not to hunt, not to conclude early, and not to flatter oneself.

Key points

  1. Do not be taken in by the phenomena

Unusual experiences in practice arise naturally. They are not reliably marks of progress.

  2. Vitakka and vicāra are the gate

The voice in the head does not stop by itself; it thins as the mind steadies, which is the order the suttas give.

  3. The breath disappearing is not a malfunction

The suttas place this at the fourth jhāna. Practitioners who have not been told tend to panic and come out.

  4. Only what was actually experienced

The speaker is explicit that he is not concluding on anyone else’s behalf, or displaying attainment.
